| Summary: | This test illustrates the presence of dispersed Calcium and Magnesium which characterize Hardness. (Dispersed solids form a suspended "cloud" with the Precipitation Solutions by attaching themselves to a polymer added during the test. The solids then become more voluminous due to the addition of the polymer. The size of the cloud is proportional to the amount of hardness solids present in the water. The test should be used as an illustration of the presence of dissolved solids, not as an indication of the quality or "drink ability" of the water.) |
| Instructions: | 1. Fill one test tube half full with tap water. |
| 2. Fill the other test tube half full with conditioned water. | |
| 3. Add 5-10 drops of Precipitation Solution #3 to each test tube and mix. | |
| 4. Add 5-10 drops of Precipitation Solution #4 to each test tube and mix. | |
| 5. Allow the test tubes to remain in the test tube stand for several minutes. | |
| THE UNTREATED WATER BECOMES CLOUDY WHILE THE TREATED WATER REMAINS CLEAR. | |
